Do what makes you feel happy
Think for a moment in your life when you did something just for the sake of society and social group…
Think for that moment that you know what you did is wrong and will harm you…
In the previous blog, we learned about how peer pressure can be dangerous for any individual.
In this blog, we're going to talk about one of the most common things that every one of us faces which is social pressure.
According to psychology, social pressure is the influence exerted by a group or society on an individual or another group to comply with particular norms or behavior. This pressure can be overt or covert.
We all are affected by social pressure. Maybe in school or college, in our society, or in our daily discussions, we are experiencing societal pressure at different levels in our lives.
But how can we explain the Societal Pressure? How does this affect the mental state of a Person? How simply can these social pressures ruin any individual's life?
We all have such moments in life. From our parents to teachers to every person you meet. Whatever we do, we do it somewhere under the pressure of society. From our eating habits to our choice of food have changed a lot.
For the next paragraph, I want you all to think from a different perspective...
Put yourself in an authority and think...
Your kid or a younger sibling has a big group of friends or colleagues. They all go out, have fun, eat a lot of food, party all night, and stay out of the house. You trust your kid/ sibling and you know they don't drink or smoke or any kinds of such drugs but…
That one day, the day when she lost her control, or maybe the day when their friends forced them to drink. The day when she refused, they did it just for the sake of being cool. They did drink that night…
The race to be cool is costing too much to upcoming young generations. Just for being the cool kid and being the sport they try something that is not actually cool.
Being in a society is what has made us do things that are not really for us.
We all do things for the people, for society, and not for our own happiness…
Think about the last big fat Indian wedding you went to...
The number of cuisines, themes, and whatnot… The amount of money spent on that wedding is unbelievable and what about a person who can not spend too much?
What about someone who doesn't show off? They feel excluded.
Many times people spend more than their pocket just to please society.
We the newer generations in different ways are confined in the false narrations of society whereas our elders are in some other.
I personally have been in this trap of being cool. I have done things that are not good either for me or for my health. I have been under the pressure of society and the people around me that had led me to do such things.
I never blame people or my friends for dragging me into all this. maybe I had less willpower, maybe I was not too strong to resist, maybe I didn't have anyone to guide me through this phase...
But now I am over it and di feel good. the older you get, the more you realize that it is you who has to feel good and not others.
These social pressures can lead to mental instability, financial instability, and whatnot.
These social pressures can be a lot to handle. It gets difficult to handle them. So as people of society, we must not force anyone to do anything that can harm them, their finances, or their health.
Everyone is different and everyone has a different life. Respect that and Let them live it.
Till then, you too focus on yourself rather than society.
