Tulsi - Holy or Medicinal

A small leaf that turns out to be one of the most celebrated Ayurvedic Herbs. As a part of the Indian Hindu family, eating and using holly basil has always been important. Yes, I am talking about Tulsi. A holy, medicinal plant that all mothers have given to their kids when they get sick or have a cold. Tulsi has been there in our house at all times, but why?

As the 21st century generation, we all like to learn and are curious about proofs of things that are done in our families in the name of religion. Today, I bring in front of you the facts that make tulsi so important apart from the sacred, religious beliefs.

Tulsi or Holy Basil or Ocimum Sanctum is one herb that holds strong importance when it comes to health and lifestyle. No matter how many herbs are recognized by Ayurveda, Tulsi remains preeminent and is always to prove its benefits. Tulsi as an herb, holds a very strong place in the life of a Hindu. Tulsi is referred to as Tulsi Ji, a plant that is prayed upon and taken care of. According to Hindu Mythology and Ministry of Culture (Website: Indian culture), tulsi is known as ‘the elixir of life’ or ‘queen of the herbs’.

Tulsi is meant to be grown in the center of the house, which helps keep the atmosphere full of oxygen, clean, and keep any germs away. Every part of Tulsi has its own beliefs, roots have seen a pilgrimage, the branches represent the divine and the crown is the scriptures. Sounds delusional but this is what we believe in.

According to the referred website, every part of a tulsi plant has its own importance. Apart from the religious beliefs, I told you we will discuss the importance. Starting with the basic importance, the daily medicinal value of tulsi. Jaw pain, skin diseases, voice, eye disease, internal body issues, mental issues, insect bites, and whatnot. There is a never-ending list of diseases that can be cured by Tulsi, and I am sure that just a list can take up a whole blog. As mother medicine, tulsi, or holy basil, works wonders in Ayurveda.

From food to air, nothing is pure, and for that, we take pharma drugs which eventually make us worse. Drugs like Acetaminophen, Meloxicam, Paracetamol or Chemicals like Butylparaben, Tetrachloride, and Copper Sulphate, and pesticides like Chlorpyrifos, Lindane and there are an endless number of toxicants that we take almost every day in our body. Living in such a chemical-infused world makes it important for us to have something that can intoxicate our environment and body. According to research by Scientists and Experimental research, it is proven that tulsi or Ocimum Sanctum has great abilities to protect the human body from such toxic chemicals and keep our rivers, kidneys, and brain better.

According to NCBI, eating tulsi every day or including the use of tulsi in your daily life can address problems like mental or physical stress, protect your internal body, blood pressure, and glucose, and most importantly, will grow and build a strong immunity system. From eating raw tulsi to brewing a tulsi tea or creating a paste to mix in water and drink, there are plenty of ways of taking this holy basil into account.

India has always been a hub for ayurvedic medicine and due to the religious beliefs, people have been using tulsi for so long that it becomes almost hard to trace the history of tulsi, but this shows how important tulsi is not only religiously, but also scientifically. It is high time for us as youth to wake up to the reality of life and understand the beauty of our culture. The Mythological aspect is true or not, I don't know, but one thing is for sure Our ancestors knew what was coming and they provided us with the elixir of life and we are the ones who can either ruin it or protect it.

The choice is yours, so choose consciously and smartly.

One tulsi leaf a day will definitely keep the doctor away.

Till then, be safe and healthy and I shall be back with something new!!
